2022 Ralph Melville Memorial Lecture. 8th June 2022 Portcullis House, Westminster. Professor John Morton presents: Developing-Country Livestock Producers as the Rich World Turns Away from Meat

The 2022 Tropical Agriculture Association annual Ralph Melville Memorial Lecture will now be held on 8th June 2022 in the Attlee Suite, Portcullis House, The House of Commons, Westminster, London, SW1A 0AA commencing at 18.00hrs

The event will be hosted by TAA, sponsored by Rt. Hon Jesse Norman MP and chaired by Dr Andrew Bennett, President of the Tropical Agriculture Association.

The presentation will begin at 18.15 followed by drinks and a buffet supper. A contribution of £25 per participant to be paid on the day at the venue.

Abstract

It is increasingly accepted by scientists, and increasingly taken up by campaigners, that a radical reduction in meat consumption, at least by people in wealthy countries, is a key action for a global reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This raises unavoidable questions for the livestock sectors of poorer countries – commercial meat producers, but also hundreds of millions of smallholders, pastoralists and landless livestock-keepers, people largely characterised by poverty and vulnerability. Many pastoral systems pose these questions in particularly complex ways – pastoral producers are vulnerable and often poor, but involved in transnational flows of livestock and meat. The lecture will explore the scientific, socio-economic and ethical questions around supporting these livestock producers, through development assistance and through trade
