TAAI LONDON CURRY CLUB TALK: Improving the sustainability of oil palm March 14th 2023

Oil palm is now the number one source of vegetable oil worldwide, but its expansion has come at a significant cost to tropical rainforests. However, being perennial, it can develop significant complexity in its lifespan, opening up the potential for oil palm to be managed for greater biodiversity. In this talk, Professor Turner will describe collaborative work that his group has been carrying out with the oil palm industry to investigate ways that oil palm can be managed to maintain biodiversity and healthy ecosystems without negatively affecting yield.

Ed Turner is Curator of Insects and Professor of Insect Ecology at the University Museum of Zoology, Cambridge, and has been working on oil palm ecology for nearly 20 years, much of it in Indonesia and Malaysia.
