Bicton Overseas Agricultural Trust (BOAT)
This is a registered UK charity that was set up by TAAI SW members with Bicton College. It focuses on East and Central Africa and aims to provide high-quality and appropriate training to enhance the management, planning, business and training skills of those key personnel tasked with running rural development organisations and natural resources training colleges. Lack of management capacity, business acumen and reliance on external funding are major weaknesses of NGOs operating in the developing world. In particular, BOAT concentrates on the provision of training in skills which are transferable and which can benefit a wider group of people than those participating directly in the training. Challenge of Managing Fall Armyworm
This insect reportedly feeds on over 350 plant species, many of them crop plants. In large numbers the larvae can devastate a crop, seemingly overnight. With a propensity to develop resistance to insecticides, fall armyworm continues to be a challenge for management in its native range and now as a global pest that affects multiple production industries. Western Australia is fall armyworm’s newest home. We will need some creative and innovative thinking to manage this challenging pest.
